Transformational and Transitional Advising: Effective Referrals for Student Success
Niki Weight, Head Advisor for the College of Education, Oregon State University

RECORDING NOW AVAILABLE
Advisors are often the first to know what challenges students are experiencing, and as such consistently refer students to appropriate resources. For referrals to be effective, students need transformational referrals (preparing students to advocate for their needs) rather than transactional referrals (providing information). This webinar will discuss how to use relational and transformational advising approaches to support students, particularly those from underrepresented communities, in identifying challenges and needs and building self-advocacy skills to seek out resources. Attendees will learn about common barriers to help-seeking behaviors and practices implemented by the College of Education at Oregon State University to enhance referral practices. Attendees will leave with strategies for transforming help-seeking mindsets and implementing effective referral practices in their day-to-day student interactions.

We often look at how we personally interact with students on an individual needs basis, but how do we interact with students on a whole and at departmental, institutional, and structural levels? Based on research of needs of students with disabilities, particularly psychological and emotional (such as depression and anxiety), this session looks at how we can proactively decrease and aim to eliminate barriers for students.
